Beach Boys' Brian Wilson, Wife Melinda Say 'Love & Mercy' Biopic Was Tough to Watch

Beach Boys founding member and his wife Melinda talk nearly their biopic.

Many say Wilson's wondrous creativity peaked with the 1966 album, "Pet Sounds," featuring timeless songs like "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and "God Simply Knows."

"It was the greatest part of his life, great part of my life," Brian Wilson said in an interview with ABC's Chris Connelly for "Nightline."

But through all his smashing success, the vivid, yet emotionally fragile, Wilson struggled with mental disease. His wife Melinda Wilson said over the years she learned about the toxic mix of voices in his head, the brutality of his male parent, and the drugs Brian used, all of which plunged him into emotional breakdowns and subsequent seclusion.

Living through all of this was one thing, but seeing the intimacy of their lives played out in front of them on the big screen in "Love & Mercy," the biopic about their beloved story, was "a whole different ballgame," Melinda Wilson told "Nightline."

"I didn't know how tough it would be," she said. "I think I was more nervous than him when I took him to see it, and after, I said, 'And so what did y'all think?' And he goes, 'Oh, it was really a lot worse in real life.'"

"Some of the things that I relived were distressing, you lot know, sad and upsetting," Brian Wilson said. "They were rough to spotter."

"Everyone who was on this moving-picture show, yous only expect in each other's eyes, you'd exist like, "OK, we're non here for annihilation else. Permit's give this-- we're all in, right?'" Cusack said in an interview with "Nightline." "This wasn't a coin gig. This was, 'OK, allow's try to brand a film and-- a existent film.'"

"I remember coming together her at her dealership, Cadillac, and I said, 'God, she's a pretty girl. That'southward a pretty daughter,'" Wilson said. "I just said to myself, 'God, I recollect I'll see her again one-time.'"

"That'southward what attracted me to him," Melinda said. "He was so squeamish."

"She said to me, 'Music is his first love. Naught can supercede it. Information technology's his being, it's his essence, information technology'southward his everything, And then I'm settling for 2nd, but it's a pretty good-- it's a pretty good 2d,'" Banks said of a conversation she had with Melinda.

"She barbarous in love with someone who was very damaged and had bug," Banks continued. "I wanted to really try to sympathise where the purity of her love came from. They're perfectly mated and matched. And I felt that in talking to her and coming together her and agreement her… how she came to the relationship."

Today, the Wilsons alive in Beverly Hills with their v children. Brian will plow 73 this calendar month.

"Love & Mercy" actors say they are proud to accept a role in portraying his challenging times, and in celebrating his now acknowledged greatness.

"He's so vulnerable," Cusack said. "Only he's likewise a real survivor, if you retrieve about the people who didn't survive the '60s or couldn't survive some of the things that he's gone through."
